This can be hell, once your plant is ready to take down you have to decide, do you wet or dry clip? There are a lot of different ways people take there plants down. You can take the whole plant down by cutting it at the stock, or you can clip off branches one at a time. If you are waiting to clip until the plant is dry then the best move would be to take down the whole plant. If you decide to wet clip, then the best way would be to cut off branches one at a time and clip as you go. Get a good pair of clipping scissors sold at any garden center or grow store, and latex cloves believe me on this one. Take branch and try not to hold bud to much, clip any big leaves off first throw away, then move onto to the buds, it is a good idea to get something to clip over, you are going to want to save these leaves. Clip as close as you can without clipping off any bud, if you do clip some bud off no big deal, put on plate and save for later. As you clip your bud, clip off any little leaves and shape buds, now there ready for drying.
By hanging your plants upside down, the sap flow will continue and the plant will put its last energy into the buds. In addition to, they make sure that the buds dry slowly and protect them a bit, because these leaves will curl around the bud after a couple of days of drying.
Now you are done with the hell of clipping, now it is time to dry. If you decided to wait and push the hell of clipping off and dry clip than take the whole plant hang it upside down by the stock then hang it in a dark cool place between 60 to 70 F and humidity between 55- 65 %. If you can, you are going to want to add a fan, keep it at a low speed and not aiming at the plant, if no fan then try to move stale air a few times a day.
If you wet clipped the plant and are going to hang dry then use a hanger or string to hang the branches, same thing upside down, hang it from one of the buds on the branch, a cloths hanger should hold quite a few, then hang the hanger in room to day. The buds are dry enough to jar and burp when the branch snaps after drying.
Clipping is done now time to use a drying rack. Drying racks have enough space for large quantities of product, preventing plant buds from touching each other. If plants and buds touch during the drying process, drying can be inhibited, and harmful microbes can damage a large quantity of product.
A harvest drying rack is a multi-chamber mesh container. It has multiple levels for storing buds, and is the best way not not take up as much space as if you hanged dry. The best way to use a dry rack is to clip off your buds from there branches and place on the mesh drying rack not touching each other. Hang drying rack in cool dark room between 60 - 70 F and humidity between 55 - 65 % move buds around on the rack a few times a day. Make sure to move air around so to not get stale.
What is curing Cannabis? Curing is a process that involves aging/drying harvested plant material to fine-tune the moisture content and allow for the decay of sugars and chlorophyll before consumption. Curing happens after most of the moisture is evaporated from the bud. Enough moisture content remains, preserving the cannabinoids and terpenes while reducing the water and chlorophyll down.
Now how to do it, after you are done clipping your buds and they have dried, usually after 6 to 10 days of hang drying or rack drying, you place buds in a jar, not to packed they need room to move around, put lid on, and place in dark room. When you first put the buds in the jars check them later that day, they might moisten back up if this happens leave lid off jar, and roll jar around moving buds to exchange air, check later that day to check moisture, if still wet leave lid off for a day then check and repeat. If buds are dry later that day, then open jar twice a day to burp, exchange air and when lid is open roll jar to move buds, do this for a week to 10 days then you should be good to start the process of a nice cure. Place jars in dark cool room and let cure for 4 to 8 weeks the longer the better. No more need for burping.
